Ume was used to spending her lunches being harassed out of her food out of her money, so she didn’t mind spending it alone. Sure, it was a bit saddening, but she could cope with that instead of the alternate. She picked at her tray of free lunch Hope’s Peak had to offer. She couldn’t stand sitting in the cafeteria or in classrooms—Everyone was always so happy. Talking to their friends…It must be fun. The ringmaster wouldn’t know, though. She didn’t have any friends to sit with.
Instead, she sits on a bench rested on top of the school’s roof. A chain fence surrounds the quarters and gives a peek of the rest of the school. If Ume were to turn her head back, she’d have good look at the school’s track. Her eyes stayed fixated on her food, though, and for once, she wasn’t hungry. Even Ume had trouble swallowing sadness, sometimes.
The door to the building opens and she sits up. It seems someone else wanted to have lunch on the rooftop, too. She glances up at them, not getting a good enough look of who it is before going back to her food. She wouldn’t say hi first.
Joseph froze in place, his messenger bag hung silently from his shoulder. He had half the mind to turn away and eat elsewhere, yet she looked alone. What if she didn’t want to be alone, though? What if she wanted to hang out with somebody. He couldn’t leave now, after thinking that he felt as if it would be rude.
“Hey, how are you?” A simple greeting started out hesitantly, Joseph closed the door and leaned on it. “Uh..”
He looked for the right words to say, but wasn’t exactly sure what to say. He’s never really spoken out to a person before. Joseph wondered if the girl would even respond.
